The Centre for Information Systems, Organisations and Society (ISOS) is the top performing research centre of the Salford Business School. The centre members are particularly interested in advocating the "Salford School of Thought" in critical and interpretive information systems research.

Charles Ess seminar: Ethics and Politics of "Digital Selves"
Author of many books including recent titles such as ‘Digital Religion, Social Media and Culture’ and ‘Digital Media Ethics,' Professor Charles Ess, past President of AoIR and convener of and contributor to a host of other Conferences and workshops, Distinguished Research Professor at Drury University and Professor of Media Ethics at the University of Aarhus, describes his interests as Information ethics, computer-mediated communication, cross-cultural approaches, media theory, and the nature of the self / selves vis-à-vis the media.
Passport to Trade 2.0
New project approved October 2011 - Passport to Trade 2.0. The aim of this project is to research the latest mobility needs and social media etiquette of SMEs and placement students in 31 EU countries and develop multimedia on-line training material that helps in increasing European SME mobility & increasing student mobility for work & study placements.

Great news from Association for Learning Technology (ALT) -Cristina da Costa - has been announced a joint winner of the 2010 ALT Learning Technologist of the YearCongratulations to Dr David Kreps!
Dr David Kreps was one of 22 out of 558 papers nominated for Best Paper at the Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) 2010 held in Lima, Peru. This is one of the top conferences in the IS field, and included representation from over 30 different countries, from Australasia, Europe and the Americas.
1st ISOS meeting in 2010/11 academic year
ISOS held its first meeting of the 10-11 academic year in the ThinkLab with Pro VC Research and Innovation Ghassan Aouad, and Acting Assistant Registrar (Research Coordination) Matt Boswell attending. It was a very successful and stimulating meeting with much discussion of our potential engagement in MediaCity, followed by a Pechu Kucha on IS theory, with Andrew Basden on Dooyeweerd, Marie Griffiths on Castells, Bruce Robinson on Marx, and David Kreps on Poststructuralism. Aleksej Heinze updated us on the latest developments with the new ISOS spin-out Centre for Search and Social Media Marketing. Most full members and many PhD students attended.

Information Systems Research in UK
The recent UK wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) outcomes showed that 75% of the research activities of the former Informatics Research Institute (IRIS) at Salford were at international level, with 25% at the world leading level. Following the restructuring of research at Salford, undertaken in the summer 2009, ISOS, now constituted as a Salford Business School Research Centre will maintain and develop this reputation for international and world-leading information systems research.
PhD study at ISOS
Do you want to study for a PhD in the ISOS research centre? Have a look at the research areas below and contact the appropriate research centre member to informally discuss your research proposal. The postgraduate research application should follow the University of Salford’s guidelines.
There are some suggested PhD topics which could be used as a guide, but we still require a full research proposal as per the ISOS "how to write a research proposal guide".
